Join us as our Health and Safety Specialist. This position is hybrid and can be based in New York, Boston, Durham, Chicago, Pittsburgh, Atlanta or Washington, DC.
Support Global Safety, Health & Environmental development and day to day management of, policy and process related to H&SE within US Operations. Fulfil those duties incumbent on the appointed competent person (as statutorily referenced) for the firm in relation Health & Safety management. Promotes compliance & best practice within US Offices and Operations to relevant standards. Promotion of best working practice and consistently high standards within the whole team. Maintain relationships with internal stakeholders across US Operations and interact with integrity to maintain H&SE processes across those operations. Support US Operations when dealing with third parties (specifically contractors or contracted service providers). Collate, monitor, analyze and review H&S performance and trends, identify appropriate initiatives and differentiators to ensure continual H&S performance improvement, driving consistency in US Business Unit.
Recognized by stakeholders as a Subject Matter Expert around Office & Facilities operations, able to prioritize across a wide range of differing stakeholder needs. Able to interpret data and recognize trends and act on this intelligence with stakeholders to mitigate any potential threats.

Key Responsibilities:
- Facilitate audits by external auditing agencies for ISO 45001 and 14001 certification throughout the US region
- Support annual schedule of internal and external audits H&S.
- Support global health and safety policies domestically in the US as required.
- Provide specialist H&SE expertise and day-to-day support to the US+ Operations team.
- Provide support for a range of risk assessments, including but not limited to, fire, first aid, general office, generic business wide and specific risk assessments.
- Compile performance reports for the US BU stakeholders and leadership teams and monitor performance against established metrics.
- Advise U.S. Workplace Lead as to trends and non-compliances from reports and metrics being collated
- Support the development and implementation of initiatives and best practices in H&S risk management.
- Promote and maintain the behaviours and values of Buro Happold.
- Manage relationships with externally sourced H&SE risk resources.
- Support the achievement of good industry practice and business competitiveness.
- Facilitate effective business communication through various channels.
- Support H&S risk aspects of new business processes, including bid and contract generation.
Key Skills
- 2+ years’ experience working within an office environment, with exposure to hard / soft facilities management services and / or a multi-disciplinary Engineering / Design Consultancy environment.
- Ability to develop networks and relationships, working across a wide range of stakeholders, and able to interpret signals to action from these stakeholders.
- Coach and mentor others and share knowledge in a positive and impactful manner, seeking alignment to H&SE goals which support business goals.
- The ideal candidate will have proven expertise in the development and implementation of Health, Safety and Environmental processes, and also the administration of such processes.
The following will also be required.
- Presentation skills using Microsoft 365 tools
- Able to utilise Excel to effectively manipulate data
- Use of SharePoint as a communications / document repository medium would be advantageous
- Ability to prioritise work effectively and work under pressure.
- Ability to work as part of a team and to work and operate effectively with colleagues to achieve the goals and targets of US Operations.
- Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written forms to staff at all levels of the company and external organisations, maintaining confidentiality of information.
- Able to work on own initiative and be pro-active in giving advice.
- Good organisational and administrative skills and ability to work on multiple tasks and ensure work is delivered on time.
- A clear personal commitment to Buro Happold’s customer care policies and an understanding of their relevance to this post.

Qualifications
- Strong understanding of ISO standards (14001 & 45001 in particular)
- Has undertaken an internal auditor role for above, and organized audits from start to finish
- Technical and Training qualifications preferred but not required
- Knowledge of WELL / JUST/ schemes and data acquisition / reporting requirements
- Working knowledge of global H&S legalisation to include:
- Deep knowledge of US H&SE legislation
- Knowledge of ILO and/or other international health & safety standards preferred

- Salary range of $70,000-95,000. This will be determined based on factors such as geographic location, skills, education, and/or experience
