We are recruiting for a Structural Engineering Technician Apprentice to join our friendly and innovative Edinburgh Structural Engineering team, who are involved in a wide variety of challenging and exciting projects both locally and further afield.

Edinburgh College provide an excellent programme of study on a day-release basis. You can read more about this course options via these links: Civil Engineering HNC and Architectural Technology HNC. You will be able to study on a part time basis to achieve an HNC in Civil Engineering after 2 years, in addition to an SVQ after 3 years. This Modern Apprenticeship with be delivered in partnership with the CITB. Starting salary on offer is £26,228 plus additional benefits.
The Modern Apprenticeship will provide an excellent foundation for achieving Engineering Technician (EngTech) status with the Institute of Civil Engineers (ICE). EngTech registration demonstrates your professional competence, practical skills, and commitment to the industry.
What will I be doing?
As a Technician, you will provide 3D Models and 2D drafting and technician services to the structural engineering team on a wide range of projects using the latest CAD software and 3D modelling packages to accurately illustrate engineering design solutions.
As part of a multidisciplinary project team, you will also involve some interface and co-ordination with wider project teams, both internally and externally, including architects, engineers, contractors and clients. In this capacity you will represent Buro Happold.
Day to day you could be:
- Producing models and drawing from Engineer’s sketches and from scratch using architectural drawings and/or concepts.
- Assisting in developing systems and procedures to ensure that the CAD system is used effectively.
- Assisting in the development of computational engineering to delivery current and future project designs.
- Contribute to providing solutions to design problems.
- Attending workshops and meetings.
What do I bring to this role?
- A keen interest in the built environment and a strong desire to learn new skills and software
- Good communication skills and a team-oriented focus, including an ability to work in a team environment
- A positive and inquisitive approach and the confidence to ask and respond to challenging questions
- Experience of working with 3D modelling packages is an advantage but not essential
What qualifications do I need in order to enrol
One pass at Higher Level B or above in Mathematics or Physics.
A National 5 in Mathematics or equivalent.
A National 5 or Higher in Graphic Communication is advantageous but not essential.
Funding for this Modern Apprenticeship is covered by Skills Development Scotland (SDS), therefore the candidate must meet SDS Criteria. This includes the requirement for the apprentice to be Scottish resident and have Scottish full working rights.
