Have we got a flair for the complex? Buro Happold's Energy Consulting team is looking for a Senior Energy Engineer to join our vibrant and friendly UK team to take a leading role in delivering our International Masterplanning Projects.
The role will involve hybrid working and occasional travel overseas with the flexibility to be based out of any of our UK offices.

Our UK Energy team sits within the Buro Happold Cities division and contains over 50 engineers, scientists, geographers and commercialisation consultants. The team is split geographically across London, Bath, Leeds, Manchester and Edinburgh and delivers projects both in the UK and internationally including the Middle East, United States and Europe. Our team of experts deliver designs throughout the project lifecycle and across different project scales from national or regional scale spatial energy system analytics to the detailed design of some of the most innovative district energy and smart grid installations.
Required Skills
- A very good understand and experience in energy masterplanning (concept to detail design), preferably with a focus on delivering projects within the GCC region.
- Experience in large scale renewable power system and HV transmission network design as well as thermal district energy plants and network design
- Able to develop concise and engaging reporting material and technical drawings (i.e. layout and P&ID’s) using AutoCAD and / or 3D modelling software.
- Experience in stakeholder engagement (including utilities) and being in a client facing role as part of multidisciplinary teams
- Able to lead and provide technical guidance to dedicated project teams to deliver project scope including the sizing, design, operation and implementation of renewable technologies and district energy systems.
- Able to identify and justify appropriate systems through robust optioneering analysis and ability to undertake research and evaluation of new and emerging technologies, policies and services in the energy sector.
- Ability to communicate detailed design and technical subjects to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Have an understanding of the wider engineering disciplines involved in master planning delivery and able to collaborate as part of a multi-disciplinary project teams.
- Degree educated, preferably in a related discipline e.g. mechanical, electrical or chemical engineering, energy, physics or environment with or working towards to professional registration such as CIBSE, EI, IMech and IET.
Desirable skills
- Experience in undertaking techno-economic appraisal of energy systems
- Experience in engaging and working with regulatory authorities within the GCC region (i.e. SEC)
- Experience in managing project teams of 5+ people
- Ability to use GIS, EnergyPRO (or similar) or Powerfactoy (or similar)
- Experience in Seawater cooling designs and/or 5th generation thermal network solutions
- Experience in client or owner’s engineer roles overseeing construction and delivery of district energy projects
- Ability to undertake research and evaluation of new technologies, policies and services in the energy sector.
