Senior Bridge Engineer

This is an exciting opportunity for a talented Senior Bridge Engineer to join Buro Happold’s Bridges team in London or Edinburgh and help us deliver innovative bridge projects across the world. You will work closely with leading architects and multidisciplinary teams on schemes ranging from elegant architectural footbridges to major highway and rail bridges in locations including the UK, Germany, Saudi Arabia, UAE and the USA.

As a Senior Bridge Engineer, you will take responsibility for the design and delivery of bridge projects from feasibility through to detailed design and construction. You will act as Project Leader on selected commissions, ensuring technical excellence, effective coordination and strong client relationships in line with Buro Happold’s reputation for creative, value-led solutions.

Your skills and experience:

You are an engineer with a strong background in bridge design who wants to grow expertise on complex and high-profile projects internationally. You combine sound engineering judgement with design flair and enjoy working collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams.


  • Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (or equivalent) and Chartered Engineer status or nearing completion (MICE, MIStructE or equivalent international qualification such as PE/SE).
  • Proven experience in the analysis and design of bridges, including assessment of existing structures and architecturally led structures.
  • Ability to take technical ownership of bridge design packages and deliver work to agreed standards, budgets and programmes.
  • Experience acting as a design lead or project lead on bridge or structural projects, coordinating inputs from others.
  • Good communication skills, with confidence liaising directly with clients, architects and other consultants.
  • Commitment to continuing professional development and self-directed learning.
  • Ability to mentor and support the development of more junior engineers and technicians.
  • Experience in architectural bridge design and in working on international projects, as well as commercial and contractual awareness (including experience contributing to bids and managing fees) would be advantageous but not essential.

 Key Duties: 

  • Acting as Project Leader, planning and managing project delivery, resources and programmes.
  • Developing concept, scheme and detail bridge designs, often in close collaboration with architects and urban designers.
  • Leading the inspection and assessment of bridge and civil engineering structures.
  • Preparing, checking and taking ownership of engineering solutions for detailed design, including analysis, calculations, reports, drawings and specifications.
  • Leading and coordinating Engineers and Technicians, including workload planning, technical guidance and quality verification.
  • Leading and contributing to design workshops and design reviews with internal teams and external stakeholders.
  • Communicating directly with clients and ensuring all relevant Buro Happold colleagues are informed of key client and project matters.
  • Preparing technical and financial proposals, and setting up and managing project administration systems, including monitoring and forecasting fees, resources and expenditure.
  • Monitoring financial performance of projects and contributing to continuous improvement in how work is delivered.
  • Mentoring engineers and graduates.
