Facade BIM Designer

Buro Happold is recruiting for a Facade Designer cum BIM Engineer to join our Shenzhen office. 

This role will see you collaborating within a global, interdisciplinary community of engineering specialists, including Structures, Building Services, Sustainability, Computational, and much more.

You will be working as part of a talented specialist team focussing on a portfolio of innovative, pinnacle projects in China and further afield, including iconic high-rise towers, transportation hubs, mixed-use developments and cultural centres.

You will be working on some of the most technically challenging projects in our portfolio - recent examples include:

City of Dream (Morpheus) in Macao - Morpheus is the fifth tower in Macau’s City of Dreams complex, a premier leisure and entertainment destination for national and international visitors. Standing 40 storeys high, the 150,000m2 hotel accommodates 780 guest rooms, luxury suites and villas, retail outlets, restaurants, a casino, spa and sky pool, as well as meeting and events spaces.

Louvre Abu Dhabi - Louvre Abu Dhabi is the jewel in the crown of Saadiyat Island, the city’s new cultural district. Designed as a ‘museum city’, the new 58,000m2 art and exhibition centre boasts a myriad of gallery spaces clustered beneath a shallow domed canopy, creating an expansive yet intimate space in which visitors can meander and mingle at their leisure.

Youth Olympic Centre in Nanjing Buro Happold, together with Zaha Hadid Architects, won an international competition for the design of a new facility associated with the 2014 Youth Olympic Games held in Nanjing. The resulting development takes centre stage in the city comprising two majestic towers, of 300 metres and 250 metres respectively, which provide amenities that include a breath-taking 47 metre high conference centre, offices, and a 5-star hotel.


Key Duties:

  • Set-up complex BIM models and work-flows using tools such as Revit, Rhino, Grasshopper, Autocad 3D, Sketchup, Civil 3d, 3D Max, to generate compliant drawings, data and model deliverables.
  • Manage and organise BIM tasks related to the project and able to coordinate BIM models through selected routines and integrate into clients’ models.
  • Recognise when necessary basic BIM documents are missing and know how to request these from the client.
  • Run clash detection and coordination routines and communicate the results to relevant parties.
  • Produce computational data, analyse variations and provide solutions to enhance panelization efficiency.  
  • Instigate good design through critical and analytical thinking.
  • Work, draft and brainstorming through 2D and 3D media.
  • Exercise notions of sustainability, solar protection, code regulations, fabrication, procurements and technical designs.
  • Prepare sketches and drawings for project proposals.
  • Attend meetings with clients, architects, contractors and other consultants;
  • Coordinate and cooperate with other parties of project team to assure smooth running of projects;
  • Review project specifications to ensure all design related work compiling with project requirements;
  • Ensure design concept is complied with project requirements;
  • Assist in developing design technically from initial client idea using various materials such as: aluminium, steel, concrete, stone, glass and timber.
  • Deliver work in a timely and technically competent manner.

You will be responsible for all drawing sets, presentation and detailing in all project phases, and will coordinate work with architects, clients and other consultants. Naturally this will require you to be able to understand and react to the changing design of the overall building and be able to communicate your ideas clearly in speech and good quality hand sketches, or other means as necessary

Your skills & experience:

  • Degree / Higher diploma or above in Architecture / Civil Engineer/ Building Engineering (or equivalent)
  • Good knowledge of full set drawings including concept, tender, construction and technical detailing
  • Excellent project management, client coordination and people management skills.
  • The ability to develop ideas convincingly “on the page” in a meeting will be a significant advantage. 
  • Good working knowledge of GB/BS EN/ASTM codes & other international design standards, etc 
  • Proven experience in all phases of design process, preferably with a strong knowledge in China / Asian market.
  • Knowledge of building physics including ventilation, solar gain control, thermal insulation and glare control.
  • Knowledge of typical facade systems (unitised, stick, window wall, glass wall)
  • Experience of the practical aspects of handling and fabricating typical cladding materials.
  • Confidence in working in a complex and international environment.
  • Proficiency in software such as AutoCAD, Sketchup, Rhino, Grasshopper, Revit, 3D Max, PowerPoint and Adobe Suite.
  • Able to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Fluent in Mandarin and English.
