Energy Consulting @ Buro Happold

Our UK Energy team sits within Buro Happold Cities and contains over 50 engineers, scientists, geographers, and commercialisation consultants. The teamwork throughout the project lifecycle from national scale spatial energy system analytics through to detailed design of some of the most innovative district energy and smart grid installations. The team is split geographically across London, Leeds, Mancheste,r and Edinburgh.

What you’ll do

Your key focus areas will be on energy system policy, planning, design and delivery at campus, development, city and regional scales. You will deliver value for our clients using distributed energy to resolve energy security, costs and sustainability challenges across the range of sectors and markets in which Buro Happold operates. 

You will be responsible for a diverse range of activities, from analysis and reporting, to planning projects/resourcing, and managing client relationships across our portfolio of energy clients.  

Your responsibilities are expected to comprise the following...

  • Leading multi-disciplinary district energy RIBA 3 and 4 design projects – comprising energy centres, district energy networks and heat customer interfaces
  • Leading energy team projects to meet budget and programme requirements
  • Supervising and monitoring the design process to ensure that the scheme design objectives are being followed and the design reflects the client’s requirements.
  • Identifying opportunities for new work and contributing to business development activities through input to fee proposals and bids. 
  • Managing energy team inputs to inter-disciplinary projects, including monitoring resourcing against the project plan.  
  • Supporting the Energy leadership in client and design team relationships 
  • Producing accurate, professional written reports and drawings that effectively communicate our work to clients and stakeholders. 
  • Delivering presentations to clients/stakeholders as projects evolve.

Our ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate the following...

  • Experience in delivering and leading concept or detailed engineering design of low carbon energy systems; production of schematics, layout drawings, district energy route drawings.
  • Technical knowledge and familiarity with the sizing, design, operation and implementation of low carbon technologies and key components in district energy systems; including heat pumps, chillers, thermal storage, boilers, plate heat exchangers, pumps and buried district energy pipework systems.
  • Experience in undertaking system investigations and modelling to support and enhance engineering designs.
  • Experience in troubleshooting and rectification of under-performing energy or process systems.
  • Experience and understanding of building integrated and utility-scale energy systems, building energy performance and efficiency standards, and regulatory drivers of energy and carbon efficiency across a range of project scales.
  • Knowledge of UK energy policy and regulatory drivers of energy and carbon efficiency across a range of project scales. 
  • Experience of team and project management to deliver client expectations on program, fee, quality etc. 
  • Competency with the sizing, design, operation and implementation of low and zero carbon technologies and key components in district energy systems. 
  • Experience and understanding of building integrated and utility-scale energy systems, building energy performance and efficiency standards. 
  • Experience of economic modelling of energy systems for feasibility studies/options appraisals.   
  • Ability to work across inter-disciplinary projects, liaising with various stakeholders. 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, ability to communicate detailed design and technical subjects to technical and non-technical audiences. 
  • Degree educated, preferably in mechanical, electrical, energy, physics or environmental related discipline.

Desirable skills 

  • Familiarity with work-winning, bid writing, and responding to public tenders or requests for proposals. 
  • Experience of the detailed design of district energy systems
  • Experience in developing detailed feasibility studies for energy systems at different scales
  • Experience of economic modelling of energy systems for feasibility studies/options appraisals  
  • CIBSE Heat Network Consultant - CP1 2020 knowledge and experience  
  • Energy network hydraulic modelling and design skills  
  • Familiarity with Revit and/or AutoCAD  
  • Participation in HAZOP and/or HAZID studies
  • Experience in client or owner’s engineer roles overseeing the construction and delivery of district energy projects 
  • Ability to undertake research and evaluation of new technologies, policies, and services in the energy sector. 
  • Excellent graphic design and presentational skills. 
  • Chartership or equivalent
