We’re looking for an Associate Principal/Principal Vertical Transportation Consultant to join our US Specialists Design Groups and help lead our dynamic and diverse vertical transportation team. Our Vertical Transportation team is at the forefront of computational design integrating analysis with our People Flow team and Mobility offering. In this role you will be reporting directly to a Partner level who oversees the Specialists Design Groups in the United States.

Your next role
Technical and Project Leadership
- Project Leader for appropriate group projects, taking ownership for sustained and productive client relationships.
- Directing multiple projects across the group, taking responsibility for the vertical transportation design solutions, including preparation of traffic analysis and equipment specifications, while ensuring financial success.
- Delivering a risk managed portfolio; working within agreed capital lock up parameters.
- Ensuring ‘design rigor’ is delivered on each project, and in particular ensuring design QA processes are fully planned and implemented.
- Maintain appropriate understanding of prevailing policies and technical innovations applying in the architectural engineering industry.
- Work closely with other specialisms within the firm, embrace structures, MEP and specialist groups and ensure vertical transportation is fully integrated.
Business Development & Work Winning
- Developing and maintaining key client relationships under all circumstances, maximizing opportunities for repeat business.
- Reviewing financial and technical submissions/proposals; attending interviews.
- Dynamic focus on new business in domestic and international markets, broadening coverage of high-quality clients and projects across a range of market sectors.
- Promoting Buro Happold’s integrated services to potential clients.
Group Operations
- Overseeing and mentoring all levels of staff so that meaningful delegation can apply within the team.
- Ensure latest learning and development initiatives are implemented as required within the team.
- Champion delivery of the company’s Performance and Development Review process in support of all the above.
- Support the management of reward and recognition of the team.
- Take on a broader leadership role across the US business for vertical transportation, looking at ways to develop our vertical transportation offering in the United States.
Your skills and experience
- Demonstrated experience of delivering innovative and creative vertical and horizontal transportation solutions within a dynamic organization, with a strong focus on high-performance elevator and escalator systems and technologies.
- 12+ years of experience
- Minimum 10 years of vertical transportation consulting experience with a major consulting or engineering firm.
- Minimum of 5 years of elevator/escalator industry experience with a major elevator manufacturer preferred.
- Strong people management and leadership skills coupled with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Knowledge of architectural design, property development, and construction marketplace in the US.
- Detailed knowledge of the full range of international, national and local building codes and design standards governing the vertical and horizontal transportation industry.
- Outstanding relationship management skills, ability to build and develop sustained working relationships with clients, colleagues, and wider network of the AEC industry.
- University degree, preferably in engineering, business administration, or architecture.
- Professionally licensed engineer and background in the elevator manufacturing industry is desired.
- Solid understanding of elevators, escalators, and moving walks and the creative design and application of these systems to solve vertical and horizontal challenges on the most complex of building types.
- Demonstrated expertise in digital applications such as the “Elevate” software program for design and application of the full range of vertical and horizontal transportation systems.
- This position is open in all of our offices in the US with a preference for NY.
What we offer
- Salary range of $150,000 to $230,000.This will be determined based on factors such as geographic location, skills, education, and/or experience
