Strategic Pursuits Director

Buro Happold is looking to recruit for a senior level major pursuits role which will focus on work winning, framework management and bid strategy to drive growth in line with our business objectives. 

The purpose of this role is to lead major pursuits and shape the strategic direction and performance of our business, ensuring that we identify, shape, prioritise and achieve opportunities that deliver the growth in sales aligned to our business plan aspirations in UK growth of major infrastructure.

This role is central to shaping our approach to major pursuits in collaborating with our technical leaders and internal bid coordinators. BH is targeting Highways and Bridges, Water and Energy in UK public sector and a suitable candidate would be able to support the business on all public sector pursuits in this space with experience of leading pursuits and frameworks in highways being essential. 

This role sits across all our infrastructure markets in Water, Energy and Transportation serving major clients such as National Highways, Network Rail, Water Companies, Government departments as well as Local authorities in highways and bridge space

Key Duties: 

  • Work across the organisation to establish winning pursuits, creating frameworks, vigorously managing these frameworks and creating long term pipeline of activity for the business.
  • Engage with customer contacts and procurement teams to gain insight into our customers’ strategic drivers to help us develop key bid themes for frameworks and individual projects as they arise through the framework. 
  • Keep informed of changes and budgetary developments that will impact on capital projects and transport infrastructure spending and priorities.
  • Use external market knowledge to identify opportunities and areas of growth for Buro Happold, actively sourcing market intelligence to shape business focus and align with direction of customers in specific sectors Water, Energy, Highways and using this market intelligence to support the BH UK growth strategy.
  • Lead on customer engagement to align our performance and support pipeline growth.
  • Support in the development of the business proposition supporting the production of external communications to align to this proposition, whilst overseeing the internal communication to engage, motivate and inspire our people and maintain our core culture of designing for complexity. 
  • Reporting on and prioritising opportunities that will drive winning bids and business growth.
  • Building awareness of our business capabilities with customers collaborating with internal stakeholders on brand awareness and messaging and building this into major public sector bids whilst supporting marketing approaches in media and written communication, 
  • Attending and representing Buro Happold at tender related events or client engagement sessions across industry forums where relevant  
  • Active monitoring and influencing of business pipeline opportunities and strategic preparation of our business for major pursuits, whilst leading on strategic bids ensuring it fits with revenue growth strategies, and working hand in hand with design teams to maximise successful bids for contracts and improve organisation capability for future success.

Your Skills and Experience

  • Background in Civil engineering or construction sector (ideal highways/rail/transport hubs) with a successful track record of achieving winning major framework pursuits with knowledge of industry regulatory environment and procurement trends such as Project 13 Enterprise models, Construction Playbook, Modern Methods of Construction etc – 
  • Experience in Highways Sector in particular consulting frameworks to include SPaTS, SDF Frameworks (Specialist Professional and Technical Services)
  • Extensive hands-on knowledge of public sector procurement process in particular National Highways and Network Rail but extending to Water and Energy Sectors as well as Market intelligence and trend analysis on budget allocations across different sectors and customer bases, as well as with customer procurement teams at government organisations such as National Highways , Network Rail (desirable)
  • Demonstrable contacts at senior leadership levels within our key customer organisations including Network Rail, National Highways, local authorities, transport bodies is essential and demonstrated evidence of this is desirable. 
  • Experience in engaging multi-disciplinary teams for bidding purposes and managing CRM systems to manage sales pipeline alongside building relationships with procurement leads and key customer decision-makers to support winning pursuits, with a track record of winning successful bids and improvements in bid win rates
  • Track record of ability to manage mini-competition process through major frameworks is essential. 
  • Degree, equivalent level academic qualification or relevant work experience at a senior level.
