Senior Nature & Biodiversity Consultant
We are seeking a Senior Nature & Biodiversity Consultant with a strong combination blend of ecological consultancy, biodiversity and GIS/spatial analysis skills to support the continued growth of our Nature & Biodiversity offering across the UK and international markets.
This role will be based in our Bengaluru office and will work as part of a collaborative work share arrangement supporting UK-based teams. The successful candidate will contribute technical expertise to a broad range of projects, helping clients address biodiversity challenges, integrate nature-positive design approaches and deliver sustainable development outcomes.
You will work alongside ecologists, environmental planners, engineers, urbanists and digital specialists to deliver nature and biodiversity services across a diverse portfolio of projects. The role combines technical ecological consultancy, spatial analysis and GIS, project delivery, and opportunities to contribute to business development and work-winning activities.

Buro Happold is looking to support the continued growth of our Nature & Biodiversity services in the UK and internationally through the addition of a Senior Nature & Biodiversity Consultant in our India office. We are seeking an experienced consultant with strong ecology and GIS capabilities who can support project delivery, technical analysis and the preparation of high-quality client deliverables.
The Nature & Biodiversity team supports projects across the UK and internationally and is at the heart of Buro Happold’s Cities UK Discipline Unit. The team works closely with planners, engineers, urban designers, landscape architects and sustainability specialists to help clients integrate biodiversity, ecological resilience and nature-positive outcomes into development and infrastructure projects.
Whilst this role will be based in India, it will primarily support our UK-based Nature & Biodiversity team, contributing to a diverse range of projects across the UK and internationally. The successful candidate will work closely with colleagues across our global business to deliver ecology, biodiversity and GIS services on a wide variety of projects.
The role will include biodiversity assessments; ecological strategy advisory; GIS data management, analysis and mapping, remote sensing; environmental zoning; restoration and offsetting planning; biodiversity strategies; and impact assessments for development and planning projects.
We provide opportunities to work on interesting and challenging projects for a wide range of clients operating across the UK and internationally. This role will also provide opportunities to collaborate with colleagues across Buro Happold's wider Cities teams in India and support the integration of biodiversity and ecological considerations into projects and proposals where appropriate.
Your next role
We are seeking a Senior Nature & Biodiversity Consultant with a strong combination of ecology consultancy, biodiversity and GIS/spatial analysis skills. The successful candidate will support the delivery of a wide range of planning, development and master planning projects and should demonstrate experience across the following key areas:
- Minimum 5 years' experience in ecology, biodiversity consultancy or a related environmental discipline.
- Experience delivering ecological and biodiversity inputs to planning, development, master planning and infrastructure projects.
- Experience preparing technical reports, biodiversity strategies, impact assessments and other client deliverables.
- Good knowledge of relevant ecological legislation, policy, guidance and industry best practice.
- Experience contributing to EIA, EcIA, ESIA and related environmental assessment processes.
- Experience developing biodiversity strategies, mitigation measures, restoration plans and nature-based solutions.
- Knowledge of ecosystem services concepts and natural capital accounting methodologies and frameworks
GIS & Spatial Analysis
- Advanced capability in GIS using QGIS and/or Esri ArcGIS Pro/ArcGIS Online, with experience applying GIS to ecology, biodiversity, environmental planning or nature-based solutions projects.
- Experience managing, analysing and interpreting ecological and environmental spatial datasets, including habitat, species, constraints, opportunities, land use, remote sensing and environmental baseline data.
- Ability to develop robust GIS workflows, including data collation, cleaning, validation, georeferencing, spatial analysis, metadata management and QA/QC.
- Experience producing high-quality maps, figures, infographics, and spatial outputs for technical reports, client presentations, environmental assessments and design team coordination.
- Experience using GIS to support ecological constraints and opportunities mapping, habitat mapping, biodiversity strategies, restoration planning, offsetting, natural capital or ecosystem services assessments.
- Experience integrating, converting and managing data between CAD, GIS and other spatial data formats.
- Experience with remote sensing, spatial modelling, habitat connectivity analysis or suitability analysis would be advantageous.
- Interest or experience in automation, digital workflows, and AI-enabled approaches

- Experience managing project programmes, budgets and deliverables.
- Ability to identify project risks and develop practical solutions.
- Experience preparing fee proposals and contributing to work-winning activities.
- Experience mentoring and supporting junior team members.
- Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities across multiple projects.

Qualifications
- Degree in Ecology, Environmental Science, Geography, Natural Resource Management or a related discipline.
- Postgraduate qualification in a relevant discipline desirable.
- Membership of a relevant professional institution (such as CIEEM, CIWEM, IEMA, IES or equivalent) or working towards professional accreditation.
- Commitment to continuous professional development and maintaining technical excellence.
- Strong report writing, presentation and communication skills in English.
- Excellent written and spoken English, with the ability to prepare clear technical reports and communicate effectively with UK-based colleagues and clients.
- Ability to communicate technical information clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Experience engaging with clients, project partners and other stakeholders.
- Strong collaborative and proactive approach, with the ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary and geographically dispersed teams.
