Senior Air Quality Consultant

Could you help expand our air quality services in the North of England? If you have a background in air quality consultancy and can be based out of one of our northern offices (Manchester or Leeds) a couple of days a week, this role could be perfect for you.

The role will support with growing our air quality offering in the north of the UK, working alongside our global air quality lead.

This Role Will Encompass:

Our Air Quality service line sits within the Environmental Consulting Discipline, at the heart of Buro Happold's Cities Group. This role will help to facility further growth within our air quality team with a particular focus on supporting our Northern offices. 

Buro Happold are looking to support continued organic growth with the air quality services in the UK, by placing an air quality senior in one of our northern offices to head up the service offering to these offices.   In particular, support is required to manage and deliver air quality design support and dispersion modelling to support planning and permitting applications.

We provide people with the opportunity to progress and work on interesting projects with a wide range of valued clients who operate both in the UK and internationally.

The successful candidate will support a wide range of on-going projects across sectors including residential, science and technology, commercial, international, industrial and energy. You will have a client-facing role with responsibility in terms of managing project delivery and teams. 

We Are Looking For: 

We would expect that you can demonstrate:

  • A track record of leading air quality assessment, Air quality ES chapters including those for Development consent orders, and RIBA based design support in the UK; 
  • Contributing to marketing strategy and business development with a particular focus on the northern UK market. 
  • Expert in atmospheric dispersion modelling, particularly for the assessment of air quality impacts using ADMS road, ADMS 6 or AERMOD. Strong technical capability in this area with the ability to review and interpret data;
  • Designing and implementing ambient and indoor air quality monitoring plans including both passive and automatic techniques;
  • Thorough knowledge and demonstrable understanding of relevant legislation, policy, technical guidance and industry standards and best practice relating to air quality.
  • Any existing experiences in indoor air quality is advantageous, with experience in building certifications including, BREEAM, WELL and Air Rated. 
  • Experience in Odour, Ecological and dust risk assessments. 
  • Proficiency in coaching and mentoring junior staff to develop their own technical skills;
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written;
  • Working knowledge of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) – Q-GIS or ArcGIS. 
  • The ability to take the lead in challenging situations in a confident and proactive manner;
  • Actively contributing ideas to identifying changes in working practices to maximise internal efficiencies;
  • Track-record in the consultancy sector ideally with an engineering consultancy, with strong customer focus;

Excellent knowledge of project and business financial and management systems; and

  • Have a degree in mathematics, physics, chemistry, environmental science, geography or a similar subject preferably with a related master’s degree and full Membership of the Institute of Air Quality Management or the necessary qualifications/ experience to become a Member.
