Mechanical Associate Director

We are recruiting for an Mechanical Associate Director to join our Building Environments team in our Manchester office.

The role will offer the opportunity for you to immerse yourself in a varied portfolio of engaging and dynamic projects both in the UK and globally, offering the opportunity to work on unique and high-profile projects.

Our Manchester Building Services (MEP) team is involved in a wide variety of challenging and exciting projects. With current projects including: 

  • Wrexham AFC Kop Stand Redevelopment, Wrexham (Populous) – Following the success on the pitch of the football club this project aims to kick-start the redevelopment of the STōK Cae Ras stadium with a new 5,500 stand housing the players and media facilities, general admissions and high quality hospitality 
  • MMU Library Transformation Project, Manchester (Hawkins\Brown) – Creation of a new world class library and teaching building located in the heart of the All Saints campus in central Manchester
  • Sister Manchester Plot C, Manchester (Allies & Morrison) – The first new build development on the Sister Manchester site, comprising 500,000ft2 high quality commercial office space alongside community use spaces 
  • BuroHappold's Manchester Building Services team continues to deliver cutting edge design solutions which encourage the efficient use of materials, energy and natural resources. Our holistic, multidisciplinary design environment affords our engineers the freedom and creativity to push the boundaries of sustainable building technology across HVAC, Electrical and Plumbing disciplines in close collaboration with practice-wide specialist groups such as sustainability & physics, facades, lighting, and technology.  

 

Key Duties  

We invite you to join our close-knit team as a Mechanical Associate Director providing outstanding design engineering services to the Group on a range of interesting projects, working closely with our Engineers and Associates. You will take ownership of delivering sustainable and innovative design solutions for building services projects led by the Manchester office, although contributing to delivery of international projects in our portfolio.  

The role of an Mechanical Associate Director can be very varied, duties will include but are not limited to: 

  • Contribute to leading the mechanical team and take a project leadership role as required.
  • Communicating directly with Clients, offering innovative design solutions and managing expectations. Further developing relationships with existing and new clients including contractors, architects and developers.
  • Preparing technical and financial proposals for new work.
  • Managing workload of engineers and technicians
  • Preparing Technical Specifications.
  • Monitor financial performance of jobs as well as setting up and managing job/project administrative systems, including planning and monitoring job resourcing/expenditure.
  • Undertake detailed mechanical engineering building services design and calculations, using Revit and IES software to support your knowledge of exemplar building design and performance, as well as an appreciation of a designs embodied carbon.
  • Embrace technologies to improve performance and sustainability to meet to net zero targets by 2030.
  • Ensure project are carried out to an excellent standard, within agreed deadlines and budget. 
  • Actively engage with colleagues across disciplines, in group discussions and at events and seminars.
  • Mentor more junior team members, potentially leading to an early line management role.

 

Your Skills and Experience: 

As an experienced Mechanical Associate Director, we would expect that you will be able to demonstrate: 

  • Extensive mechanical design experience in an MEP consultancy, with experience acting as project leader.  
  • Diverse sector experience, ideally with large scale project experience. 
  • Strong interpersonal and organisational skills, able to develop relationships with clients, architects and other team members.
  • Bachelors or master’s degree in engineering
  • Professionally registered with a relevant institution; e.g. CIBSE, IMechE, etc.
  • Although mechanically biased it is expected that you will have a good understanding of other design disciplines. 
  • A Bachelor’s degree BEng/BSc or Master’s degree MEng/MSc in a relevant discipline.
  • Broad design knowledge, from working on a wide range of projects and using British, US and European codes of practice.
  • Experience using common analysis software including Revit and IES and willing to quickly learn to use new analysis packages as required.
  • Digital engineering skills (e.g. coding) or use of automation tools would be advantageous.
