London BIM Technology Lead

We have an exciting opportunity for a BIM Technical Lead to join our Structures team in London. The London Structures team comprises approximately 100 structural engineering staff and technicians. The London Structures BIM team comprises 10 staff. The Associate Director will line manage no more than 5 team members.

The BIM Technology Lead is to work alongside the BIM lead to manage the BIM team and additionally to drive development and innovation in the team.   

The BIM Technology Lead is to work within the London Structures BIM team, and the wider London Structures Team, to provide leadership and management to the technician team and to drive development, innovation, and efficiency in our BIM practices and workflows (40%). The BIM Technology Lead will also undertake BIM Modelling and production of BIM outputs, and take on project BIM Lead roles (60%). 

The position will be based in London but will potentially involve occasional travel to other offices and countries for projects.

 

Key Accountabilities

Principal Objectives:

  • Good leadership and management of the BIM team in London Structures
  • Developing new tools, approaches and ways of working which improve efficiency and quality in our ways of working in Building Information Modelling and production of structural design information. 
  • Deputising for the London Structures BIM Lead

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Project delivery and leadership:
    1. Multi- and single-disciplinary BIM Lead role on major UK and international projects
    2. Active involvement in Revit modelling when required.   
  • Team leadership and management: 
    1. Providing effective leadership, direction, and technical advice to the team. 
    2. Overseeing team resource planning and management. 
    3. Taking responsibility for line management, leadership, and mentoring within the London Structures team.
    4. Reviewing team members’ performance and supporting their development.
    5. QA management of drawing and models to ensure consistent quality
  • Development and innovation: 
    1. Work with London BIM Lead to set a BIM development and innovation strategy for the team.
    2. Engaging with research and development opportunities within and outside Buro Happold.
    3. Overseeing BIM development and innovation within the London Structures Team.
    4. Collaborating closely with computational and technology leaders across the business.
    5. Trialling and rolling out new approaches, tools, and technologies, always with project delivery at their heart. 
  • Communicating effectively and proactively with internal and external stakeholders.

Level of Autonomy and Decision-making:

  • The post holder is accountable to the London Structures BIM Lead and the London Structures Discipline Lead for the delivery of their objectives and responsibilities, and for their conduct. 
  • The post holder is accountable to a Project Director and/or Project Principal for their contribution to projects, as suits the post-holder’s role on particular projects. 
  • Considerable freedom to set the strategy and agenda within the development and innovation portfolio, with the opportunity to take on a leadership role beyond just the London Structures team.

 

Qualifications, Skills & Experience

The BIM Technology Lead should exhibit expert Revit and BIM capabilities, with significant experience of BIM leadership roles on single- and multi-disciplinary building design projects. Specifically: 

  • Qualifications: Appropriate engineering, architectural, or other built environment professional qualification(s). 
  • Industry-Leading Knowledge: The BIM Technology Lead should have extensive knowledge of BIM across design disciplines, with particular expertise in structural engineering projects. 
  • Delivery: The candidate should have a strong understanding of project delivery requirements at each project stage and be able to produce these in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Revit: Should have a strong knowledge and proven experience of delivering projects in all versions of Revit, including experience of industry approved add-in tools to demonstrate efficiency gains in model and drawing production.
  • Innovation: Strong understanding of current industry-leading practice and areas of innovation, with the ability to implement and deliver cutting edge practices, and drive innovation, particularly in the areas of automation and development of computational tools, including Grasshopper, Dynamo, and Rhino Inside.
  • Excellent people and communication skills, with the ability to communicate ideas and thinking in an inspirational manner.
