We are seeking a talented graduate with a strong ambition to become a Building Performance Engineer to join our Sustainability team, helping to shape the design of buildings to achieve net zero carbon targets, whilst still delivering a high-quality internal environment that promotes occupant wellbeing. 

What sort of projects would I work on?

Buro Happold’s sustainability team delivers fantastic projects, ranging from the BREEAM Outstanding, NABERS 5* Workship Square - through to decarbonisation of the Empire State Building. You will have the opportunity to work on both new and existing buildings across a full range of typologies, both in the UK and internationally, including working with some of the world’s most prestigious architects. 

What will I be doing?

This opportunity will allow you to work alongside our senior team members, learning how to leverage cutting edge building simulation techniques alongside innovative building services design, shaping your career as a next generation Building Performance Engineer.

Day to day activities will typically involve:

  • Net Zero Building Design  
  • Energy modelling to inform architectural and building services design 
  • Advanced HVAC and building simulation to estimate operational energy consumption
  • Thermal comfort and daylight analysis 
  • Parametric modelling of building façades  
  • Renewable energy systems 
  • Embodied/whole life carbon analysis
  • Decarbonisation strategies for existing buildings  
  • Energy audits
  • Post occupancy evaluations
  • Presenting to clients and design teams 

We would like to hear from you if you are studying (or have graduated) in any of the below degrees:

The role is suitable for someone with a STEM based degree with a desire to work in the design and decarbonisation of the built environment. 

Essential skills:

  • Excellent communication (written, graphical, verbal) skills and a capable presenter
  • A team player with strong interpersonal and collaboration skills, who enjoys engaging with others to find innovative, practicable and deliverable solutions to complex problems.
  • Comfortable working in a deadline-driven environment 
  • Demonstrable interest in building simulation and the optimisation of building energy performance
  • Passion for driving the Net Zero Carbon agenda within the built environment

Preferred skills: 

  • Basic knowledge of building energy, heating, cooling and ventilation systems and controls would be advantageous  
  • Experience with Rhino and Grasshopper is preferred and some knowledge of coding (e.g. Python, C#, JavaScript) would be beneficial 
  • Prior experience elsewhere in a similar field through industrial placement or past employment.
