Laboratory Consulting at Buro Happold

Buro Happold’s laboratory designers bring a wealth of expertise to projects, informed by decades of experience delivering some of the most complex yet human-scale research facilities to world-leading clients.

From design concept to delivery to peer review and post-occupancy evaluation, our laboratory consultants can provide the support required at each stage. We are also able to draw on Buro Happold’s deep experience of integrated engineering and design knowledge from a wide range of projects around the world.

Our track record in laboratories, research facilities, innovation districts and university research buildings spans a wide range of scientific disciplines and technologies and is based on developing a deep understanding of our clients’ needs. We understand that different branches of science and technology need very different approaches and use our experience to create spaces which encourage creativity and accommodate changing technologies. This reduces the need for future investment, while providing scientists with stimulation, safe and effective workspaces.

Our recent workload includes UCB Project Apple where we supported Heatherwick Studio to create a major new headquarters for a global biopharmaceutical company. With Kadans and the Canary Wharf Group we supported KPF Architects on One North Quay, Europe’s tallest purpose-built commercial lab.

Key Duties:

  • Supporting design, research, analysis and consultancy activities across projects.
  • Contributing technical input on projects as part of a collaborative team.
  • Working alongside the Project Leader and/or Director, to interpret stakeholders and user requirements into strategic design decisions.
  • Participating in single- and multi-disciplinary team meetings with lead architects, contractors, consultants, etc.
  • Producing and reviewing reports, presentations, Revit models, and drawings to a high standard of accuracy and quality in line with client expectations.
  • Proposing solutions to project challenges and clearly articulating the benefits and limitations of each option.
  • Working with the Project Leader to plan and meet project deadlines and programmes while complying with Buro Happold procedures.

Your skills & experience:

Some professional experience in science (and non-science sectors particularly in fit-out) is beneficial but not essential. Experience in adjacent sectors such as healthcare or data centres would also be viewed positively.

  • Exposure to Revit and confidence developing your modelling skills.
  • Strong drawing production abilities with attention to detail.
  • A strong interest in the life sciences sector and enthusiasm to develop experience in this area.
  • An analytical mindset with well-developed problem-solving skills.
  • Clear and effective verbal, written, and graphic communication skills
  • Working knowledge of Photoshop, InDesign and the Microsoft Office suite is advantageous.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within an open, team-focused environment.

What’s in it for you:

A good balance of interesting and challenging projects to stretch your professional skills, a friendly and close-knit team, flexible working and a competitive reward package. The opportunity to work on multidisciplinary projects alongside a range of specialist engineers and designers both within Buro Happold and our collaborators.

Our Graduate Connect program allows our Graduates to learn the fundamentals of design and technology whilst building a base in consulting and professional skills. This is a blended learning programme where participants gain experience against our internal professional and technical frameworks in relation to their specialism.

In addition, we see membership of a professional body and professional registration as crucial to the development of our engineers and designers and offer substantial support to those aspiring to achieve this. We aim to support employees to achieve the highest level of membership and registration their academic background allows.
