Experienced Energy Engineer/Planner

The Cities Energy team specializes in energy system policy, planning, design and delivery at the campus, city and regional scales. We work from visioning to concept strategy through to detailed design and delivery. The Energy team often works hand-in-hand with Buro Happold’s MEP engineers and sustainability consultants to deliver integrated, low carbon and resilient energy solutions at every scale.

We are looking for a senior specialist to join our Energy Team in the US, building on our strong track record such as New York City’s Roadmap to 80x50 and GeoMicroDistricts work to decarbonize gas utilities, and to support the team with the Energy Transition, winning new commissions and delivering excellent outcomes for our clients. You will join a rapidly growing global team of over 50 dedicated energy professionals located all around the world.

Responsibilities: 

  • Strong energy skills including a track record of successful project delivery for a range of client types
  • Ability to apply systems approach to complex problems in the energy and/or built environment sectors
  • Experience in geothermal and/or central plant design
  • Ability to manage internal and external teams to project completion
  • Experience of working as a consultant and leading consulting engagements direct to client
  • Work-winning skills with public and private sector clients/stakeholders
  • Preparing proposals for clients and development of client propositions
  • Ability to determine client requirements and deploy various resources to meet them
  • Experience providing overall guidance to and management of junior staff
  • Experience liaising with stakeholders, including organizing and leading workshops
  • Network of contacts within client organizations who commission energy planning work such as various tiers of government, campus/private network operators, real estate developers and utilities
  • A strong understanding of energy policy within North America
  • Knowledge and experience of energy system modelling including techno-economic modelling of energy systems   
  • Strong demonstration of written and oral communications and presentation skills, and ability to communicate complex engineering and planning concepts (i.e. decarbonization, resilience) effectively to diverse audiences including municipal government, private investors, and community groups

Desirable skills:

  • Advanced degree or research background in energy systems or similar
  • Bachelor’s Degree level, or equivalent, in with emphasis on physical science or engineering background
  • 8+ years’ experience working on large scale, multi-disciplinary projects in urban development and/or infrastructure
  • Professional Engineers (PE), Certified Energy Manager (CEM) certification or similar
  • Experience in managing staff at the project and organization level
  • Understanding of the market and supply chain for energy systems including geothermal, power/smart grid, district energy, energy storage and renewables in the US
  • Strong understanding of the revenue models and costs associated with energy systems
  • Experience of developing evidence-based policy
  • Ability to assemble collaborative teams to compete for innovation funding
  • Experience of energy system design such as geothermal, district heating and cooling, power generation, CHP and renewables

What we offer:

  • Salary range of $115,000 to $150,000. This will be determined based on factors such as geographic location, skills, education, and/or experience
